The Colombian Regions

When you visit Colombia, you’ll discover that each of its five regions feels like a small country of its own, with unique cultures, cuisines, music, and traditions. From the Caribbean’s vibrant beaches and rhythms to the lush Andes filled with history and coffee, the Pacific’s rich biodiversity and Afro-Colombian heritage, the Orinoquía’s vast plains and cowboy culture, and the Amazon’s magical rainforest, every region offers a distinct piece of Colombia’s essence. To truly understand the heart of this country, you must explore at least one city in each region.

CARIBBEAN REGION

This region is located in the northern part of the country. Historically, socially and culturally it is one of the most important regions. Over the years a social and cultural diversity has developed, this has been perpetuated through traditions and ways of living that are notoriously different from other regions
of the country.

The most important cities are Cartagena, Barranquilla and Santa Marta. The weather is between 24 and 34 ºC  with high humidity depending on where you are and the time of year.

PACIFIC REGION

Is the area of greatest biodiversity and rainfall density in the country. It has one of the jungles with the highest number
of species per square kilometer.

The Humpback Whales arrive in the Pacific region to procreate and mate, as do some species of Sea Turtles that come to spawn. In this region grows African palm, coconut palm and wax palm.

It includes the entire department of Chocó, and the coastal areas of the departments of Valle del Cauca, Cauca and Nariño. The humid tropical climate of the rainforest prevails, with temperatures higher than 24 ºC and permanent rains.

ANDES REGION

This Region has a wide range of thermal floors and the largest number of natural parks in the country. It is the habitat of the condor, emblematic bird of the Colombian flag. It also hosts hundreds of other avian species, such as larks, partridges, turkeys, ducks, hummingbirds, green toucans and occasionally migratory caicas from North America.

In this region there are also faras, squirrels, armadillos, wild rabbits, curies, borugas, foxes and deer. It is also home to exotic species such as the night monkey, the howler monkey and the crested eagle.

It is located between 1000 and 2000 meters above sea level, so its temperature can range between 10 ° C and 24 ° C. This climate is unique to the Andean region.

AMAZON REGION

This region has 42% of the national territory and is known as the lung of the world due to its great jungle extension. It hosts the largest variety of freshwater fish on the planet and a variety of exotic mammals such as the pink river dolphin, the manatee, the jaguar, the puma, the giant otter, the peccary, the tapir, the capybara, the sloth and various primates. There is also the river turtle and the largest caiman in the world.

Through the Amazon runs the second longest river on the planet and one of the most beautiful and representative species of the region flourishes: the Amazonian Victoria water lilly.
The average temperature in the region is 25.3 ° C., With minimum average of 21.5 ° C., And maximum average of 30.2 ° C; the lowest temperatures is between June to August and the highest are between December to January.

ORINOQUÍA REGION

This region, also known as “Llanos Orientales”, consists of wide plains and savannahs. It has a great variety of fauna and flora more than 300 species of birds, mostly aquatic.

The flora of this region is mostly grouped in the El Tuparro National Natural Park, cataloged as a Biosphere Reserve. From this place you can see all the landscapes of the Colombian eastern plains: the savannahs, the rivers, including the exotic, multi-colored Caño Cristales and the large forests and its canopies.

The average temperature in the region is 25.3 ° C., With minimum average of 21.5 ° C., And maximum average of 30.2 ° C; the lowest temperatures is between June to August and the highest ​​are between December to January.
